Flux Factory’s Mission is to support emerging artists through Artist-in-Residencies and Exhibitions, education, and collaborative opportunities. Flux is an artist-led space that builds strong communities and preserves the vitality of art in NYC. Since 1994 Flux has hosted over 300 Artists-in-Residence, both local and international, and staged over 700 exhibitions across all disciplines. The Flux residence located in Long Island City is a center for creativity and experimentation that encourages using collaborative methods. Flux is home to more than multidisciplinary events. The events are open to the public, and all artists are compensated. Each year, Flux selects 40 Artists in Residence to assist them in developing their art by offering affordable studios and shared spaces (such as the print shop, woodshop, and a technical office) and a solo show and opportunities to develop their professional skills. Flux is open to 100 diverse artists each year to open calls and four Group Exhibitions.
In 1994 seven artists resided within an old spices plant on the dry Williamsburg waterfront. There were no barriers or constructions, sources of water, or HVAC. The site, with humble beginnings, quickly became a well-known art center, providing an entirely different experience from the gallery scene, which is commercial. Flux was registered as a 501c3 non-profit organization in the year 1999. After 2002 Flux became unprofitable and was relocated to 43rd Street in Sunnyside, Queens. In 2002, Flux created the Flux Major Group Exhibition program that featured four group exhibits per year. In 2009, Flux relocated from Eminent Domain and moved to its current site at 39-31-29th Street, Long Island City, New York. This was the trigger for creating a residency that will host 40 artists a year.
The year 2021 was when Flux Factory announced that it had acquired two spaces and had achieved an enduring status with financial assistance from The City of New York. The location of Flux is located at 29th Street and was acquired to enhance the duration and quality of the Artist-in-Residency program offered at Flux. Change is also introducing a new venue, called “Flux IV” (the fourth venue Flux previously operated) in mid-2022. It is located on Hunters Point South’s waterfront. Hunters Point South waterfront. The Rhizome Project
The Flux Factory Rhizome Project is dedicated to providing a safe place to hear Black voices. It is a way to share Black stories to be told by offering the necessary support to help the stories thrive and grow. It is crucial to remember that the Rhizome Project is a growing entity. As it grows, we will provide programs that concentrate on professional development and other forms of assistance. We will pay attention to the voices of Black artists and maintain a dedication to social and economic actions. Many roots support the plant.
